I am currently enrolled in a basketball program. The beginning of the workout this morning was just some running and stretches. We did some stationary bike work first and then we ran. In the middle of the running i felt like I was about to pass out and I almost got sick.

I woke up late and didn't have time to eat breakfast. Did I feel this way because I didn't eat or am I just out of shape?

What should I eat for breakfast before these workouts so that this doesn't happen?

Yes, you felt faint due to the fact that you did not eat breakfast. The word "breakfast" comes from the two words "break" which means "stop" and "fast" which means "go without food". So breakfast means to "stop going without food". Your body went without food all night (more than 8 hours, probably) and all morning. You are a teenager and still growing, you need to eat every morning for overall good health, let alone for basketball.

A good breakfast should include a serving or two of FRESH FRUIT, a serving of STARCH (toast or oatmeal, etc.) and if you eat PROTEIN, try some lean turkey sausage, and some DAIRY (yogurt or milk).

Give your body the help it needs....you are in charge of it from now on. Be good to yourself.

Oatmeal. It was the only breakfast that kept me going when working in a steel foundry. You may have almost passed out due to lack of sweating and/or overheating. Try drinking gatorade mixed 50/50 with water so that you get your electrolytes. If you keep feeling dizzy and short of breath you should get an exercise stress test from your doctor and get your heart checked. You may even have Asthma and not even know it. Could be a lot of reasons. But, probably, just a really hard workout on an empty stomach.

.
the truth is that feeling faint as you did can be as a result of many things . i suspect that your blood sugar levels were to low as you didn't have any breakfast and you didn't mention any sort of substitute for breakfast. like a donut and coffee.
now without tests i cant say for sure what the cause was no one can . you can however consider this as a warning alarm from your body that you need to go to the doctor and tell him what happened as well ask for if appropriate ask for complete physical
i wont wait long to see the doctor as this could be something that may reoccur at anytime and you may faint the next time as well if you have what i think you do then you risk further harm
i am thinking you have a condition that results in your body not being able to fully handle sugar and the processes that the body goes though to extract sugar from foods. so make an appointment to see a doctor tell him about this episode and ask him to give you a complete check up.
then after that go back and shoot some hoopes

My guess is that in addition to not eating, you also didn't drink anything either. If you weren't well hydrated to begin with, and then you went running and sweating a lot on the excercise bike, you most likely became dehydrated, which can lead to nausea and light-headedness. In severe cases of dehydration, you can pass out or have other ill effects.

If you DID drink water and were hydrated enough, then I would say you should get checked out by your Dr. You may be coming down with the flu, or have some underlying disorder (circulatory, diabetes, etc) but since this has never happened to you before, I think that possibility is nil.

You were most likely dehydrated (did you drink alcohol the night before??), and simply haveing lots to drink before practice should eliminate another episode like this.

It's never good to eat less than two hours before a serious work out but it's ok to snack on something: power bars, energy drinks etc... You may have felt that way because of low blood sugar or maybe poor diet. I'm a runner and have learned that slice of bread with penut butter right before a work out does the job.

Hi Jon Is this the only time this has happened? If so, it sounds like you were starting to faint. I had a similar experience. I was injured at work and had to get my hand stitched. As I was watching the doctor sew me up, I felt the same way that you described. If you were merely fainting because of gore, then don't worry about it. But if this happens at any other time, you very definitely should see a doctor. Take care SirJohn180

That happened because you did not eat anything before exercising. Anything can be a good breakfast, as long as it is food!

WHEATIES! Try drinking more water, and if that doesnt work you might be anemic and need iron supplements.
