If its aching = you are successfully building your stomach (abdominal) muscles.

If you are in pain = you are working them too hard and should lay off working them until the pain subsides.

The reason why it aches is because to build muscle, the muscle fibers actually tear. Your body will then use protein to repair the muscle and the fibers will grow back bigger and stronger. Lactic acid is what makes the muscle go slightly hard. You should wait at least 48 hours between working out and you only need to work each muscle group ONCE per week, unless you are training for the Olympics or a muscle man competition.

Aching is common if you have only just started working out.

Make sure you work the ENTIRE ab region, otherwise you will not get well defined abs. This includes the upper, lower, inner and side regions. For exercises to hit ALL of these areas, ask a gym instructor or search the web. Your regular "crunch" does not work the entire ab region.

Also, ALWAYS work opposites. If you are working your abs, work your lower back. Working your chest, work your upper back, etc. This is to maintain muscle equality and is especially important for the core body - otherwise you end up with an uneven, hunched posture and increase the risk of muscular injury.

ALSO, you will not get a flat stomach by just doing sit ups alone. You will need to get less than 20-15% body fat before the beach body shows herself. For this, you will need to do some rigorous CV work - at least 30-60mins 3-5 times per week + stick to a healthy, low fat/sugar/salt eating plan. And by getting more lean muscle all over your body, it will actually increase your metabolism, meaning even more calories are burnt off just by sitting around!!

If you don't cool down properly you will get a build up of lactic acid in your muscles. It solidifies as it cools and can cause aching muscles

Because your stomach muscles contract after exercise at the beginning.

Keep at it, they loosen up after a week.

because you are toning them. when you tone them, they start to contract which defines you abs (giving you that cool line, then two pack, then four pack, the six pack. but you have to do sit-ups regularily to get a six pack or summin. but i naturally have the line xD)
