Lovable, stubborn little critters that because of their stubborn nature, can take forever to housebreak.

Ours didn't like going outdoors at all, for any reason ... he far preferred staying indoors, warm and fuzzy. It took 6 months for me to successfully housebreak him.

I finally just had to out-stubborn ours. I would simply take him outdoors every few hours - usually waking him from a nice, comfy sleep - and plop him down in the outside designated potty area and not let him leave that area until he had done his duty. Everytime he tried to leave the area, I would pick him up and plop him back into the potty area.

Yes, initially, for the first week or so, I thought the dog was going to win. But soon the cold winter months came along and they worked in my favor .... our lovable little monster eventually learned that the sooner he complied, the sooner he could get back into our warm & fuzzy home.

They're stubborn, independent and obstinate ... but their loving and loyal nature makes them worth every bit of effort.

Wishing you Good Luck and many years of loving companionship with your Dachsie !!

The same way you housetrain any dog.

Regularly take the dog outside, when the dog potties reward te dog with something the dog really finds rewarding. Unfortunately, most of us talk to our dogs and pet them a lot, so for a reward they are lower value than, say, food.

Take the dog out first thing in the morning,
about 15-30 minutes after a meal,
before leaving alone,
after a play session
about 10-20 minutes after drinking a lot of water (after playing?)
before bed,
every hour if not doing so already.

When you cannot watch that dog like a hawk, crate train. Teach the dog to love going into its private den, an airline kennel that is large enough for the dog to stand up, turn around, lie full out comfortably, but no larger.

Feed the dog in the crate. Throw treats into the crate for the dog to fetch. Put the dog into the crate with stuffed kongs. The crate is a good place, never a place to put dogs when humans are angry. It isn't a punishment place, it has happy associations.

good luck!

BTW, Since Dachsund is German for "Badger Hound or Dog", you are repeating yourself saying Dachsund Hound. :-)

A whole lot of patience!! I am trying to train my 3 month old puppy as I write this. Mine is a mix of daschund and chiuahua. It is freezing outside right now so I reward her as soon as she comes in with snuggling and petting her. If I give her a treat then she'll just need to go out again. I take her out first thing in the morning, after eating, and after getting her wound up playing. I also have to wait for her to do both #1 and #2. Good luck!!! Its good to know someone out there is going in and out of the house every half an hour too!!!

Dachsaunds are the best dogs in the world! Just a biased opinion. When the dog first wakes from a nap or for the day, get him/her out right away. After feeding, out right away, after playing, right away. You guessed it alot of time pooping. Thats the way they are. After about 2 weeks of this he/she will get the hint. Good Luck! Before I forget, do not bring him/her in until they have done #1 and #2.

Put your dog in a little carrier enough room for him move, he will not potty in there, because he don't want to lay in it. Every time let him out of the carrier go for the door and let him out. He will learn that everytime he gets out it's time to potty. When your at home during the day make him go out every 30 min to an hour. I have 3 mini daschounds. Good luck!!!!!!!
