Have you ever seen bologna made? If you have a weak tummy, I wouldn't recommend it. But if not, it is very interesting. The meat (at least that is what they tell me it is) is ground to very fine pieces, and spices and water is mixed with the meat in huge vats . It is packed into a casing material which is cylinder, hence the round shape. Bologna and sausage casings used to be made out of sheep or cattle intestines which were round, so I am assuming that when the casings were man-made they did not think to deviate from the round shape. The humongous bologna logs are then put in an oven for further processing. Then out it goes to the slicer then packaged. This is a simplified description. Bread on the other hand is baked in square loaf pans so they are square. I'm guessing no one in either the bread bakery or bologna factory is as creative as you are and have not though of square casings or round loaf pans!

Baloney is essentially a type of sausage. Or least "true" baloney is. Most of the meat you find in the regular market isn't authentic German baloney. It's um pressed animal parts and left over meat. Anyways, sausages are made round because of the casing they use to form it. The casing is sometimes natural animal intestines but mostly now its a form of plastic. Its just traditional that way now even from Oscar Myer. As for bread, well did you think about this, how are they going to make a loaf pan round enough to sit int oven? It has a flat bottom because the racks are flat. Duh. lol

Balogna is actually an American version of an Italian sausage called mortadella. Although it really doesn't compare taste or texture wise a lot of sandwich places including Subway use it as a substitute for mortadella in their italian subs. Mortadella is round in shape like a sausage and so is balongna.
