Goto different schools around your area that you were considering, and ask the office people about the school, and get some information...
And here's a website to look up schools in a certain area I found it online, but I never have used it so hope it works out..

....Hope this helps :]]]!!

Ok I was a secondary school teacher and I have taught in several schools in urban areas such as liverpool which are probably not too dissimilar to those in Glasgow.

You can't judge a school from the outside no way forget it way to complex an institution. How your son settles and learns is the key issue if you put the effort in to supporting him and communicating with his teachers this is more important than the choice of school. I would of course ask to go in and check them out talk to the staff if they have open evenings but take it all with a pinch of salt because appearances can be deceiving. Gut instinct is your best bet both yours and your sons.

If things don't work out remember in schools in the Uk now the curriculum is fairly standardised and switching schools is not a huge issue.

I would advise against private schools personally they can be very elitest and in honesty put too much pressure on children during what should be essentially enjoyable years of their life.

It's refreshing to see a parent who pays active interest in their childrens education I left teaching because there are too few of you guys around.

Good luck.

As a Governor at a school I suggest you contact your LEA (Local Education Authority) they will give you BAGS of information on the schools in your area. Also book an appointment with the schools you think you like and ask for a tour. When you are there DON'T be afraid to talk to the children at the school and ask what they like and don't like. Also wait at the gates at closing time and talk to the mums there about what they think is good and bad. You can also look up the their OFSTED report on the web and see what their inspections were like last time and if they are effective at educating. By law you can also request a copy of their reports.

The best thing to do is talk to other mums you know in the area - have you got to know anyone e.g. through playgroups etc thay can talk to you about schools? Otherwise contact your local Education Authority and they will send you information and application forms, and also tell you what schools are in your catchment area. Don't go by league tables, they're not a realiable way of finding out what school will best suit your child.

May I suggest that you take the child to the school of your choice for a start. It may not be the eventual one for whatever reason, but I am sure that the head or secretary will explain everything and exactly what you have to do. Most of the answers you will get on this forum will only be confusing due to the various nationalities and even England and Wales whose educational system differs from Scots. You seem to be panicking, relax, everything will work out just fine. Do it soon and don't convey your anxiety to the child................
