I have a Pontiac Grand Prix and it handled the winter conditions great in Minnesota. The frame is a little wider than most cars and it has traction control. Makes such as Pontiac Bonneville and Chevy Impala also do well during the winter. If you can find an SUV for under 30,000, you could also look into that. Possibly a Ford Escape?

I would consider a Honda Civic. Personally I just got an 07 and it's a great ride. I drive a lot (about 100 miles a day) and so gas mileage was a high priority and the Civic gets 30 city mpg and 40 highway mpg. It's a smooth ride. I got the EX which has premium 350 watt sound, Ipod plug-in, sunroof, 17'' alloys, chrome exhaust, etc... and I purchased all of the best insurances possible (100,000 mile, full tire/rim, GAP coverage).

Also, I got it in October and have driven in the snow twice thus far and it has served me well. But of course the driver and good tires factor quite a bit how well a front wheel drive will work in the snow.

Once all was said and done it was around 23,000 (modifications and insurances). Definitely don't buy a Ford or Pontiac because I have experienced many problems with both makes.

Good Luck!!

With 30K, I would buy a Mustang...V8 Premium and go all out. But...you live in MN and I live in Chicago. I could see how you would have problems. Rear wheel drive doesn't go well with snow or ice...trust me, I own muscle cars. New Camaro is also very cool and will probably be my next car, but you'd have the same problem. I'd go with a foreign car...preferably Honda or Toyota. I think a great deal right now with a nice car is the Civic Si, for around 20K. I'd spend the other 10 on upgrades, but that's me. You can also go with a used car and get like a used NSX if you want a very sporty car that works great. Don't go with Mercedes (assembled in USA). BMW's are much better and a used 3 Series would also be a good choice or an M5 if you could get one for that price. Just make sure you don't get an American car, unless you're getting a Cadillac or certain Fords, such as the Mustang or pickups...

I'm an older guy with alot of driving and buying experience.

Here is what I would recommend. You shoudl be more concerned with buying real estate as opposed to cars, but you still need to get around.

I drive a 2003 Saturn Vue. Awesome vehicle for the price, fuel efficient, and insurance is so cheap, it's almost laughable.

Since you are in MN, I'd get an AWD model.

If you want to spend more money, try the crossovers offered from, Honda, Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Chevy, Pontiac, Subaru, Dodge, and Jeep.

Hope this info helps.

Don't think "what would I look good in"? Think about what your meets your needs for transportation. Can you use a pick up to move things, small economy because you drive a lot or a four door because you usaully have people with you? Great gift!
