They wore helmets for two reasons:

1. So they would not stand out as kamakazie pilots. They looked like any other fighter up in the air.

2. So that they had a better chance of hitting their target. Without helmet, there was a good chance enemy fire could strike their face/head and kill them, thereby spoiling their chance of a bullseye hit.

At the time; the Japanese military haircuts were awful. Pilots did'nt want thier last photo op to look bad.

For the radio headsets inside the helmets that helped them communicate with each other on route to their target.
