The SKS was put into service in 1943. It was a five shot, semi automatic rifle. Very good, and copies are still produced and sold today. If not for the SKS, the Kalashinakov AK-47 would be known as the AK-43, as these two weapons were in competition for service to the Red Army. The SKS was, at the time, cheaper and less complicated than the AK, although several years later, they decided that they did need the power of a fully automatic assault weapon.

Moison-Nagant rifles were the Russians main battle rifle. Bolt action. caliber 7.62X58. I have one. Very nice shooting Rifle, very accurate, great deer hunting rifle. The safety is a little hard to work with gloves on though.
