Take a friend or go up to a group of ppl who are laughing and joking and ask them if you can hang out with them because they seem like nice ppl. They will be so flattered that you will be able to join right in with the conversation.

I know what you mean. It does sound bad to say that you need alcohol to have a good time and I'm sure that's not excatly what you are saying, but you certainly become reliant on it to let down your guard a little. I know I have. The best thing is to go with someone I think so you at least have someone to talk to at first. If you have trouble making conversation, asking questions of others always directs the attention off you and lots of people like to talk about themselves. Perhaps have a mental list of questions you could ask people to get some conversation going. All it takes is a couple of laughs to get me relaxed. Have a PC joke up your sleeve in case of emergency.

If you are the one hosting the party, consider throwing in some unique touches. For example, maybe you could find or create a recipe for a non-alcoholic drink or appetizer platter that sounds good but no one has tried before. That would be your Signature item and might start conversation.
Games are good too - bust out Arch Rival or another old school game. That should get the good times rollin'.

Play a game! We have alcohol free game nights, and from time to time a new couple may join. Once the games get started, everyone is relaxed and having a great time!

If people cannot be relaxed and comfortable without the use of alcohol, that's their problem and not your's.
Just be a gracious hostess and hopefully your guests will do what guests are supposed to do....help make the party a success by being amusing, fun, and interesting. And if they can't, that's how you know who not to ask to your home again.

Many of my friends and I don't drink, and we always have a great time. Without alcohol you can actually follow the conversation and keep track of what's going on. Also, people don't have to worry about drinking too much. It's great.

I would highly recommend stopping at the beer store for a six pack (minimum) on the way just to take the edge off. Then you're on your own. Then just be your sloppy self and talk to people you normally wouldn't. And don't worry about odd conversations, you probably won't remember them anyways.
