What about Matt. 22:37-40, "Love God with all your heart and your neighbors as yourself?" Isn't love to God and our neighbors all Jesus requires? These are new commandments.

Hello bethybug.. :)

Jesus did come to show us a New Way and in doing so, fulfilled Law..

Matthew 22

The Great Commandment

34 ¶ But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

36 Master, WHICH IS THE GREAT COMMANDMENT IN THE LAW?

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Mark 12

There is none other commandment greater than these.

John 15

10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

12 ¶ This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

Goodness gracious, if you read the passage entire passage which is

35
Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36
Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Deut 6:5, 10:12 Mark 12:30 Luke 10:27
38
This is the first and great commandment.
39
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Lev 19:18 Matt 5:43 Matt 19:19 Mark 12:31 Rom 13:9 Gal 5:14 Jam 2:8
40
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

The reason it's the greatest commandment is because if you love the Lord your God with all your heart mind and soul that means you are obeying Him and his laws. This is what Jesus meant. The way to not forget the law is to love God with ALL you heart so much so that even the love for your brothers, mother, sister, etc is almost like hatered compared to the love you have for God.

The commandments you just quoted are the "fulfillment" of the ten commandments.

Jesus said that He came to not abolish the law or the commandments, but to fulfill them.
And, yes, your premonition and insight are pretty much right on. Loving others as Jesus did is the fullfillment.

We need to love God and our fellow man and in essence we will be keeping the Ten Commandments because we won't be hurting our relationship with God and we won't be hurting our fellow man.

Hope that helps some

That's pretty much the truth and the story. It is called "the great commission" or " A New Covenant". This was because so many could not really live according to the " Ten Commandments ". So HE gave us the this new law; to love our neighbors as we love ourselves and to the love the Lord God as HE love's us.
This is the "Great Covenant ". How great is He that trustest in the Lord. !
God does really know what He is doing. ! Yes ?

He added the new ones to the old ones. If church people tried to keep all the commandments they wouldn't have time for anything else. So most of the Old Testament commandments they ignore. Meanwhile Jeuse is sitting up on heaven marking down all their misdeeds in a huge book with golden covers. He is not amused.
