If you look it up.. (as some have not..) According to Wikipedia, a "small calorie or gram calorie approximates the energy needed to increase the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 °C... [but a] large calorie or kilogram calorie approximates the energy needed to increase the temperature of 1 kg of water by 1 °C." A large calorie is equal to 1000 small calories (also known as a kilocalorie or kcal). Therefore, your question could be yes or no. However, in the scientific community when you use the word "calorie" it is assumed that you mean a small calorie. So no, they don't mean the same thing. A kcal is 1000 calories.
