Listerine is a antiseptic and it kills germs, that causes plaque, gingivitis+bad breath. Mouthwash just freshens your breath and that's it.

In our microbiology class, we used petri dishes of bacteria and took a little round cutout soaked with certain mouthwash brands and placed them in the center. The brand that was the most effective had more of the bacteria eaten away around it.
