My male dog as a urine problem. I was told that getting him fixed would help the problem. When he get over excited he urinates and he marks his territory in the house. Anyone know if getting him fixed will work?

It will help somewhat, and it would definitely be healthier for him. However, you're going to first of all, totally get rid of the smell. Then, you're going to have to work on re-training him, especially if you've been letting him do this for a while. Getting him neutered is not a cure - just a start.

Getting him fixed will help alot but not instantaneously. I have found improvement over a few months as the testosterone level declines. This is unusual but has worked for me. Have an adult male put some of his own urine in the spot outside you desire your dog to urinate. Your male or female dog will find it and favor that spot to relieve themselves. I've tried this with my own pee with no success. It works with adult male urine. I believe dogs will instinctively relieve and mark the same spot outside. Your male friend can give you a sample in a paper disposable cup. Try it. You have nothing to lose. Have a great year.

having your dog neutered for urine marking lowers the testosterone levels in his body therefor keeping him from having the desire to leave his mark and look big and bad so the female will choose him to breed. but aside from that having him neutered will help him lead a longer and happier life. the lowered testosterone will help keep him from having cancers, such as testicular, prostate and anal tumors and fistulas. all are associated with an intact male but not uinique to them. but 8 times out of 10 the dog with these problems is intact or was for most of their life. male dogs tend to roam more, because they can smell a female in heat for miles away. thus they are more likely to be hit by cars and get seriously injured in fights. depending on your dog's age the marking might be a learned behavoir and one that neutering alone won't fix. but it won't hurt him and actually is better for him for other reasons. have your dog neutered if you truely care about his health.

Neutering will help with the territory marking. He will no longer feel the need to let "others" know he has been there.

In addition neutering has far more important benefits...eliminates testicular/prostrate cancers & infections and anal fistulas..it stops the onset of unwanted hormonal behaviors.

First, how old is he? Second, how well is he house trained? Third, regardless, get him fixed anyway. And to answer your question, yes, it will help. What breed is he and how long have you had him?
