A plumb line is a construction workers tool, which is just a weight on a string and held up to see if a surface is plumb or straight. In Amos 7:6-7 God used it to tell Israel that they were not right with Him and that they were going to be judged. IT is also used in Zechariah.

Amos 7:7 Thus He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand.
Amos 7:8 The LORD said to me, "What do you see, Amos?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said, "Behold I am about to put a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel. I will spare them no longer.
Zechariah 4:10 "For who has despised the day of small things? But these seven will be glad when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel--these are the eyes of the LORD which range to and fro throughout the earth."

When used correctly, plumb lines are helpful tools for setting straight lines. Carpenters have used them for years to square wall panels and door frames. All you have to do to make a plumb line work is to put a weight at one end of a chalked string and suspend the weighted cord from a fixed point at the top of a wall or door. If the string is taut and the weight is free for gravity to bring it to rest, you can snap the string and the chalk mark that is left on the wall will be vertical and straight. If, however, the line is so loose that the weight lies on the ground and the lower end of the string is being held by a workman’s hand, the mark is sure to be slanted and crooked.

The prophet Amos was the prophet of righteousness and he saw the Lord God as judging Israel by means of the plumb line, signifying the unchanging standards of that righteousness.

Isaiah 28:17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
Zechariah 2:1 I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked, and behold a man with a measuring line in his hand.
2 Corinthians 10:16 To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.
2 Kings 21:13 And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab: and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish, wiping it, and turning it upside down.
Zechariah 4:10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.
This is a device used for getting the foundation of a building perfectly level, the weight at the end of a string shows the perfect spot where you are measuring to. But the device is used for horizontal measuring to compare that exact spot to others normally using another man with a measuring rod. But here are the only 3 spots in the Bible this term is used! Symbolically up and down is God to the man and horizontal is a man comparing himself to a man. Here are the words in Amos with king james verson ; Amos 7:7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the LORD stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.
Amos 7:8 And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the LORD, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:
these are only places pumbline are used in the bible

It's "plumb" line. Originally a lead weight was attached to a string and suspended from a height to determine whether something was straight up and down.

The expression is "plumb line", and it has nothing to do with religion. A plumb line is a cord with a weight attached (often lead, Latin plumbum) used to construct a vertical line.
