I LOVE my Canon PowerShot A620. It's a 7.1 mp camera which takes awesome still shots, and just as awesome video. Great for vacation and home use. A great all-around camera.
I had a Sony, and I gave that to my daughter, and purchase the Canon PowerShot A610 for my teenage son. The Canon A610 is exactly like my A620, but is a 5 mp digital camera. They both take GREAT pictures, but my favorite thing about the camera, is the vari-angle LCD screen. It is very easy to use, and a camera you can grow with.
I'm a bargain hunter. I purchased both NEW Canon this past late spring. My son's was under $200 and mine was $204. Just Google or Yahoo! Search for Canon A620, then for the merchant with the best price, and order on-line. The price is waaaay better than going physically to the stores. If you need it right away, just upgrade the shipping. It's still cheaper than buying at the stores. No matter what model camera you're searching for, better prices are on-line.
One of my favorite settings our A610/A620 has is,called "kids&pets". Typically you use these on the subjects that usually has a hard time keeping still. But I also use this setting when taking pictures of my soccer team during game play. I've also taken pictures of my kids, nieces and nephews jumping in the air, a la cheerleader jumps, with great results. Lag time is very, very, very minimal. (i.e. delay from pressing button to actual camera capturing the shot).
I don't know if you'll find these models at the stores. They have newer models, the A630 (8mp) and the A640 (10mp), they boast more mega-pixels. But 5mp, more than suffices for most users. What I did was physically touched and feel the camera at the store, then go on-line to purchase.
Here is the link if you'd like to check out the specs on these Canon cameras: http://www.usa.canon.com
and go to 'products' to 'consumer products' to lead you to the cameras. Check out the zoom on this and other Canon models.
While you're searching on-line, you'll also find many reviews on these cameras. All raving about the camera. You'll also find information on these cameras in Yahoo! Tech.
Hope this helps.

If your looking for something in a digital camera that is both Slim,
and with a powerful zoom, your not going to get them both. When you get a more powerful zoom, your going to get a more bulky camera, period. Right now most of the small point and shoot cameras with zoom only have a 3x manual Zoom.... which is only going to bring you about 25-30 feet closer to your subject. If you want a 10X zoom in the Canon Point and shoot line, look at the S3 is (image stabilized) it is a popular camera, a little bulkier than the rest of the canon point and shoot line, and it is in your price range. If you prefer slim over zoom, then I suggest the Canon SD line of digital cameras like the SD630 or SD700is

You should look at the amount of "optical" zoom and not "digital zoom". That just magnifies and crops it in the camera - like you would do with photochop, but the quality of course suffers.
The zoom is really only important in macro photography if you cannot (or don't want to) get physically get close to the subject (like a snake or something).
With a flower - it doesn't make as much different.
I'd recommend a Fuji. I don't know about the slim models, but in two years, any digital camera will be outdated.
A nice one (but not slim) is the E550.
It's super-macro mode lets you take a photo 0.6" away from the lens.
I think it has been replaced by newer models, so I'd check the ... OK, the Fuji F10 looks to be in your price range and is compared next to a couple of Canons. It only goes to 3" away for macros however. http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Fujifilm-FinePix-F10-Digital-Camera-Review-/Specs.htm

You notice most answers are slightly different from each other. So here's my take. Bought my daughter a camera for Christmas.
The camera's size is typical of the zoom lens variety. Fugifilm Fine Pix S5200. Has 5 megapixels, 10X optical zoom, and has wider ISO range than my Sony. I paid $237 through Amazon.com Camera came from a major photo store. Found on internet. She's very satisfied with 8X10's it produces. In the same league are Canon PowerShot S2 IS and their S3 IS and also Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H2. But Fugi is cheapest of the three. Hope I didn't confuse you even more.

The Canon SD600 is a great camera. It's small, lightweight, and takes great quality pictures. It should be going for around $250 now, less if you order online and find some good coupon codes.
If you are willing to spend a little more, the SD700 and SD800 IS are also great choices. They are both over $300, but less than $400. I chose the SD800 over all the other choices because it has IS (image stabilizer) so if you have shaky hands or you are taking pictures in low lighting conditions, your pictures won't be blurry. I don't know how many great pictures I've lost because of blurriness, but all my pictures so far have turned out great with the SD800. I think the SD700 has IS too, but has less megapixels.

I bought a Canon PowerShot SD600 Digital ELPH about 6 months ago and I absolutely love it. It is 6.0 megapixels and takes great pictures. It's very slim but has a large display on the back. The color is beautiful and details are better than pictures I've taken with other cameras. I think it was around $300 and well worth it.

I'll go with mon and say to get the Canon SD600.
"Nice zoom" and "slim and small" do not necessarily go together. It does give you a nice working range from moderate wide angle to mild telephoto, but it's not a killer zoom or anything. If you get one of them, though, you won't be able to just slip it into your purse.
If you want Canon with a nice zoom, you would be looking at the S3-IS, but that's too big for you and over your budget.

i have a cannon A430 its only about 130 dollars now without tax or accesories, its only got a 4 mega pixel, and 4 time optical zoom, but its my first digital camera and i love it to pieces. i used it on my trip to the philippines to meet my fiancee and it was great. lots of nice pictures. i've learned so much more since then(may 06'') now i'd like to upgrade to a nicer cannon, but i love the size of mine now. and it only uses AA batteries i like that, i buy the energizer lithium blue/silver colored batteries they are much more expensive but last forever with flash and zoom. one set of the batteries lasted my enitre 2weeks in the philippines over 200 photos and lots of viewing. shop amazon for cannon you can find good reviews and ideas of what people like and dislike about each model. good luck.

You can get a new digital camera from http://linkachi.com/?r1 and all you have to do is enter in your zip code to see if they mail it to your area. My uncle got his camera from that site and it arrived at his house a few weeks later. You can choose between three different cameras and they are all free of charge.
