Soma is a muscle relaxant, not a sleeping pill. It is used for muscle spasms. Yes too much will cause respiratory failure.
It relaxes all the muscles, including the ones you use to breath with. And it does cause drowsiness as a side effect.

Soma is used to help a person sleep. If too much were taken, such as an overdose, then yes, it could cause respiratory failure. If taken as prescribed, it is a very safe drug. If a person were to have a severe allergic reaction, I guess respiratory failure could happen on the prescribed dose. I give this drug often on the hospital to my patients and have never had any problems with it.

Soma can be highly addicting by the way. I don't think many people know this, but it's widely abused.
