NEW YORK - Toys "R" Us Inc. has come under fire for denying a Chinese-American infant a $25,000 savings bond prize in a contest for the New Year's first baby because the company said the girl's mother is not a legal U.S. resident.

Same as Illegal Mexicans - Liberals do not want ot judge people and tell them they are wrong...EVEN WHEN THEY BREAK THE LAW! (that is why liberal judges should not exist)

Hooray for Toys R Us! They did the right thing. I hope the an idiot judge doesn't rule for the illegals. While the article says that their legal status is unknown, that's just code for the fact that they are probably illegal.

This is about the "first baby of the year." Not the parents, and not their status. I read that the company is now giving that baby (and another baby who was in the running) the savings bond prize. So the company caved to the "bad press" from an organized group and now three babies get a $25,000 savings bond each. Good for the babies.

Why they didn't just give the money to the baby in the first place is beyond me. This isn't about immigration, it's about winning a contest.

"Although Yuki was born an American citizen, Waugh said the contest administrator was told that Yuki's mother "was not a legal resident of the United States."

Just clarifying. There was confusion about whether the baby or the mother had to be a citizen. I was unable to find "liberal" anywhere in the article...can you help me with that? Maybe I need the special eyewear that you wear!

Well, this is a strictly legal issue, based on establised US law. As of right now, any child born in the US is automatically granted citizenship in the US - this is true of any nationality. The nationality of the mother or father is not at issue when it comes to this law. It's literally what soil or part of the earth you're born on. And, this is almost exactly the same for every other part of the world (ie, if you were born in the UK, you will autimatically be eligible for UK citizenship, even if you're American.)

Also, the article you mentioned doesn't specify what the woman's status was in the US (ie, is she on a student visa, is she visiting from China, or is she working and living in the US without a visa, permit or residency status.) Now that her case has become public, INS will surely step in and have to deal with the situation.

Two things to keep in mind - strictly speaking, Toys R Us is in violation of the law UNLESS they specifically stated that the contest was only for children born of legal US citizens, in which case they are within their rights.

As for the 'liberal judges' etc, you have to remember that hundreds and hundreds of people are turned away from the US at immigration points every day, at every international airport, every border crossing, etc. It's hard to imagine how the government would be able to check the nation status of every single citizen in the US, and then pay to have them deported, especially if their children have been born there. I am not a fan of Bush, but I thought his proposal for guest worker programs was an intelligent compromise in the immigration 'war' and unfortunately his own party didn't accept it.

You said it all Chinese-American infant she is the first New Years baby so she gets the prize even if her mother is from Mars. I don't think that is liberal anything that is just using your head.

Unfortunately enabling "path of least resistance" behaviors is a liberal trademark resulting in encouraging bad behaviors rather than correcting them. Probably see more of this in days to come.
