do they pierce it with a ring type one, or a stud type one? or can you choose? i plan on getting mine done for my 18th birthday this month, so i would like to know anything i possibly can about it first.

I got mine done with a ring and wasn't offerred anything else. I think they probably do this because it is so much easier to clean. Plus, if you get a banana bar or straight bar, you'll have to get an extra long one for the piercing and then change the jewelry to a shorter one after the swelling goes down. With a ring, you can keep it the same size no matter what.
However, I'd contact the piercer yourself. Each place is different and as long as they are sanitary (autoclave, hollow needles, etc.), you should trust what they say. Be aware that this hurts a lot (nerve endings in the lips). It was my favorite piercing, but my most painful one too.
