It was a whale.
Defination of whale...Probably from the base of G5490; a huge fish (as gaping for prey): - whale.

Jonah 1:17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah 2:1 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly

there is no record of how big the fish was but had to be big enough to swallow a man. Ever seen a whale or any other big fish or what many call a fish? I have seen catfish that was big enough to swallow a man, you see sharks that are that big and you certainly see huge fish and mammels that are that big today, called whales and such. We are not told the exact species but if you but just to to an aquariam that is near to the sea, you will see some that are very much big enough to swallow a man.

It wasn't a fish, it was a Whale. Probably a Sperm Whale as they are carnivores and big enough to swallow a man whole. They still exist.

the fish was big enough to swallow a man - that is all that matters. If God wanted that incident to happen again to someone else, I am sure that He is more than capable of providing a fish big enough to swallow another man.

The biggest fish is the whale shark and even if it did swallow a man he wouldn't survive two minutes.

Theologists now believe it was a sperm whale, not a fish. Of course, back then they had no name for whales, save the balleen whales which they called "leviathan".
