Watch their body language! half closed eyes, ears up but not too much forward, relaxed paws and a gentle to-and-froing of the tail mean "I'm content and happy."
Switching tails, arched back, raised hair on the back and flattened ears mean "I'm really angry and may attack." Sad cat will seldom engage with you, preferring to curl up by themselves. Most cats are seldom sad, though a move to a new house depressed one of mine. There's a good site on this topic below.

Purring licking, and rubbing themselves against you are signs of happy. Meowing hissing, and there hair on end and "bottle brush tail" will indicate an unhappy kitten :) Goodluck

Happy kitties purrr, act all perky, knead you with their claws, and do annoying things like chase your shoelaces. Sad/ill ones don't purrr, are very limp, don't move a lot, and are kind of hunched. They might have coats that seem cold to the touch.

One way to know if your kitten is happy is it will put its tail in the air. If it's mad, it'll curve its tail down. Hope that helps!!

It'll pur when it's happy. I guess you just have to be in tune with it's bodylanguage to know when it's sad. There's no universal sad signal with cats.
