After looking at all the other cars in consumer reports for 07, the good quality performance cars in the low $20K range seems to be these 2 reliable cars. Both are 4 cyl engines, the VW has a turbo in it. I am not fat, but am a big guy and of course like a little size and power to my vehicle. Which vehicle would you recommend, whichever i would be getting i would add like a bigger turbo (i know hondas don't come with it), cold air intake, headers, etc. and modify it (include affordability)....please factor that in to whatever your opinion is. Thanks alot people!

P.S. If there is another performance car 07 in the low 20K price range you would reccomend, please do!

The Volkswagen is significantly faster and has 207 lb-ft of low end torque which means it takes off like a rocket off the line. Compare that to the Honda which has a paltry 135 lb-ft. Basically that means the Honda won't "feel" very fast and it will only go fast if you rev the the piss out of it. If you are the kind of person who likes to run up close to the redline in every gear to go fast, then you may enjoy it.

Personally I like a car that has most of it's power on tap all the time.

If you are into mods, for a couple of hundred bucks you can put a performance tuning chip in the turbo VW that will give you NOTICEABLE gains, like 25-35 more horsepower from that one mod.

You could put 4 times that amount of money into the non-turbo Honda and all you will have is a cold air intake and exhaust system that sounds like a coke can full of bees and you'll gain maybe 5-10 horsepower at the top end.

There is no substitute for torque and there is no substitute for forced induction. Period.

Now, that said, the Honda is also a VERY nice car and it will be more reliable than the Volkswagen. It's interior is more modern and futuristic. I think the Honda comes with a mechanical limited slip differential, which is better than the VW's electronic traction control. Honda's also have slicker shifting gearboxes than VW's.

Pros and cons. If speed for your money and power are major factors, you want the VW. Adding a turbo to the Honda will be a major undertaking that will void your warranty and cost you thousands of dollars. The VW already has a turbo and is built for turbocharging. Making it faster will be very easy.

I do not think you can find a VW for the low 20's on a dealer lot. You may have to order it. And I would suggest looking at the reliability reports section of Consumer Reports. VW's are not reliable at all. They are also expensive to repair, often requiring special tools, software and equipment. They are very nice cars, but the downside cannot be ignored on these.

You might as well get a used car with like 40k miles on it, because as soon as you start tinkering with a new one and adding on performance parts, you will void the warranty.

The Honda is definitely more reliable, but has no low end, and really needs to be revved. Of course the motors are near bullet proof and can handle a lot of power.

It get the impression a 1 yr old Mustang/GTO are probably not really what you are looking for (a bit too crude and rough?). I would look at a Mazdaspeed3, or maybe a Scion tC and add the TRD Supercharger (they will warranty it).

Automobile Magazine picked the Civic Si, but Car and Driver did a bigger test and chose the Volkswagen. If it was up to me I would go with the Volkswagen, as it looks better, is faster, and will be about the same in reliability.
