Depends on several factors:

1) Genetics. Some people can get it much sooner than others; some just cannot get a flat stomach.

2) How big was the gut to begin with.

3) Age. As we get older, it is harder to replace fat by muscle.

4) How pudgy you were as a child. Fat cells in your abdomen divide during the first 10 years of your life. If you ate a lot as a kid, you'll have more fat cells in that area than the average person, and losing belly fat will be much harder.

Not long at all insofar as getting great abs! Three weeks and you should be looking fantastic, as long as you don't have a big layer of fat on top of the abs. Perfect abs can be invisible if you have too much fat over them. So be sure to do some cardio as well to burn extra calories if necessary, and life a few weights to increase your metabolism (muscle burns more calories than fat).

Also, if you're doing crunch type situps rather than the old straight legged (very bad for the back) variety you will get much, much faster results. Be sure to do them slowly through the entire range of motion. Fast might give you bigger numbers, but slow will give you better results.
