I'm pretty sure the cat belongs to someone else. He used to come over on occassion, but never stayed over night.

I objected to giving him food before, but this time he was very hungry so I fed him personally.

He was meowing like mad, but he's kind of calmed down a bit with the food.

we only rent the place so we can't build a cat flap. What can we do to make sure he doesn't get stuck in again? How can we get him to go back to his owner?

It sounds as if he may have been abandoned. Try leafleting the area and putting an ad in the paper. If you have windows that slide open you can buy a cat door that will fit in them without damaging the structure of the house. Thank you for being compassionate.

Place a small water dish outside for him, but no food for a week at least. Did you figure out how he got in before? Try to block that entry. Can you put up a poster with his picture? Maybe he really doesn't have an owner now after all. Some freak could have just dropped him off. Poor thing.

If he has no collar and tag, it's going to be difficult to find the owners. Don't allow him back in your house no matter how much he cries. If he comes back and stays by your house for more than two days it's likely that he's been abandoned and you can take him to an animal shelter in all good conscience.

well im sure one reason it left its owner is because its owner probably treated it wrong. my family has picked up plenty of strays and gave it to a DIFFERENT home. i suggest you put an ad in the paper and give it to a loving family who would want it.
