Sometimes they are white. Sometmes they look sort of greenish or yellowish. What causes this to happen?

Flashing Lights When the vitreous gel rubs or pulls on the retina, you may see what looks like flashing lights or lightning streaks. You may have experienced this same sensation if you have ever been hit in the eye and seen "stars." The flashes of light can appear on and off for several weeks or months. As we grow older, it is more common to experience flashes. If you notice the sudden appearance of light flashes, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist to see if the retina has been torn.

Could be similar to mine.
I have a condition where on occassion I see lines of light, usually in zig-zag patterns and more then one color, that flash. When present, they are visible with eyes open or closed.
My opthamologist tells me that this is a type of migraine, that it varies in intensity with the person, and is harmless. He also said I should be grateful that it wasn't the conventional migraine, because these were painless. I've had them 30 years; no other side effects other than a nusiance distraction when present.

That's caused by retinal fatigue, generally brought on by staring at a TV or computer screen for too long.
