I contacted a local church and donated the books and toys to the daycare/sunday school classes.
I also asked the pastor if he knew of any needy expecting women.
I was able to help about 5 families.

I know this answer will not help you, but it can help others in my area who want to do the same for parents in real need.
In Southern Wisconsin you can call 211, United Way, The place to give and get help. When you call 211, tell them that you would like to donate items to local places that charge nothing for their services. In Madison, the capitol of WI, there's a place called the Pregnancy Helpline which is for moms/dads of kids ages five and under. You go there once a month and they can give you diapers, formula, baby clothes, baby gear, and maternity clothes for free. I had used the Helpline several times in the past, and wanted to give back and went through all of my kids clothes and donated about 90% of the clothes I had from birth to three years, then a whole bunch of my neighbors gave me their kids' clothes too, then my hubby's grandma gave us mountains upon mountains of clothes she had been collecting over the years, and we gave pretty much all of that to the Helpline also. But they are constantly in need because they charge nothing for their services and everything that they have to give is donated.
If there is a United Way in your area, look it up in the phone book, they would usually be the first place to call, and they can usually guide you to the right places. Another place to call would be the Salvation Army.

There are several ways to go about this.
Craigslist is a great way to make money off of your things. You may not get them to the kind of people you want but it'll go to someone.
Freecycle is a great way to give people things they need.
Churches can get you in contact with a needy family in the area, and the items will get put to good use.
Good for you, giving the things you no longer need to someone who does!

freecycle is good -- they have to agree not to resell items there. As far as shelters go, any church that has a soup kitchen often also has a free clothing "store."
Also, in the yellow pages, look under "fraternities" for organizations like Rotary and "charities" or "human services."
HUD or the fed's Health and Human Services local office might also be able to help.

Another good way besides the local churches is the Department of Human Resources or even the County Health Department. They should have a list of needy families. If not them, try your local police department, they should be able to help.

I had lots of help with my baby stuff when I had my daughter. I was also a single mom. What I did with the stuff she outgrew or didn't need anymore was pass it on. It always seems like someone I know is pregnant or they know someone that is and that could use the help. Ask friends if they know anyone that could use it.

There are schools for pregnant teens, non-profit organizations, group homes and halfway homes they are full of young girls and women in needs of baby items. It would be easier to help you if you noted the area where you live. The best you can to locate these places are on google adding the search term with your location.

hi-you can
place a free ad in your local paper
give the items to a church-they usually have a list that they keep for people in need
your local red cross
the angel ministries program-if there is one near you.
also your local planned parenthood may accept the items for new mommies that they help out.

You could contact your local Red Cross or Soup Kitchen they could probably give you names and numbers of local shelters. I live in Michigan and we have a Women's shelter for abused women and their kids called the underground railroad I don't know if it is just local or not.
