My husband still suffers from depressive illness even after years of trial and error with medications. He is on Effoxor, Ablilify, Lamictal, Synthroid, and testosterone. Anyone out there found a good drug treatment for hard to treat depression? Also, is there a good alternative for Effexor which has nasty sexual side affects?

Does he go to therapy??? Sometimes therapy works better then the medications....the medications can realllllly mess with your head and your body. I was diagnosed with major depression about 2 years ago and I was on Lexapro for about a year.....I could not stand it and it made me lose my appetite and I felt like a zombie....I went off of it (I don't reccomend just stopping medication without speaking to dr 1st...I had major withdrawal) and after I got over the side effects from the medication I started on working out my issues on my own. God helped a lot....also writing in a journal and actually talking about my problems helped a lot too......some people rely on medication to completely totally fix them. The medications just balance the chemicals in our head....and even people who do not suffer from depression can get depressed. Well good luck.

A psych doc should be able to change his meds to find the right combination....just let the doctor know that this combination is not working....for the synthroid med though he must have a thyroid problem or wouldn't be on that one and that has to be taken for the rest of his life...

A friend of mine is on Effexor XR and it's really helped her. I've seen a huge difference in her life. AND her sex drive is actually off the charts!

What a cocktail of drugs, paxil is okay i guess, but no drugs can stop depression just like that, they take time and therapy is the best for depression but you'll have to find the cause of his depression.
