There are currently no five star flag officers (Admiral or General) serving in the United States Military. THe five star rank is a temporary appointment, and is used denote over-all athourity when you have to many generals. The last use of a five star rank was General Douglas MacArthur before his dismissal during the Korean war. Previously, Admiral Chester Nimitz was the Allied Forces Commander for the Allied Forces, Pacific Fleet, and was appointed a five star admiralty by president Roosevelt. There were no five stars for the US in Europe as General Montgomery (Monty, British Royal Army) was the Allied commander for the Atlantic theater.

A five star general or admiral (depends if you are talking navy, airforce or army) only exists in time of war. They are what the military calls O-11's. In the Navy they are called Fleet Admirals. In the Army and AirForce it's the General of the Army or General of the AirForce. The Marine Corps and the Coast Guard don't have 5 stars. You need an act of congress to grand someone this type of rank.

NONE. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the last General of the Army, who wore 5 stars in a cluster. The rank of 5 star admiral is still around in the Navy, but it is to be used during wartime only.

Douglas McArthur was the last five star in america. The five start position went to the Secratary of Defense which is a civilian position now. They combined that with the Head of the War Dept. to make the Sec of Def.
