Did you install the Encarta software.
Encarta is a programme in it's self.
You shouldn't any extra software to open it.
Ensure you pc has the correct specifications and more importantly a DVD reading drive - look for the DVD logo on the disk drive.
Other add-on needed may be:
Direct x version 9 (Download for free)

Encarta is a complete program, but may i ask the question why have encarta when the web is a much better source of information. If you cannot open Encarta then it may be the program needs an older PC to run it on, you could try running the program compatability wizard found following this path "start/all programs/accessories/program compatability wizard". The program itself may be corrupt too.

Encarta IS the program to read itself.
