It's a very good idea!! Not only is it great for a dog's skin and fur...it also helps prevent heart disease. Break open two pills per day on your dog's dry food. If you find your dog's bowel movements get too soft with that, then cut it down to one pill per day. And don't expect an overnight change...it will take about a month to really see the benefits.
Edit: By the way...cod liver oil IS fish oil, silly!

I generally use either cod liver or halibut liver oil capsules. I had Labs for years, who tend to have dry skin, especially in the winter. So they got a capsule every day on top of their food. That gave them soft skin and glossy coats within 3 or 4 weeks.
I've had several rescue dogs who had been starved and were emaciated. Sometimes it's hard to get them to eat properly, so I dumped a can of sardines, oil and all, over their supper. No problem then! I haven't met a dog yet who didn't love sardines. So they get all the benefits of the oils and have a treat as well. As long as you don't mind fishy kisses!

Cod liver oils is better than fish oil and it does work very well, people have been taking cod liver oil for years its really good for you and contains essential fatty acids. You can buy specific formulas of oils to feed as a supplement to your dogs food, the usual amount is about 2 tbsp on top of their kibble. There are pre-mixed formulas that contain other good oils as well like Mrs. Allens Shed Stop which contains, Fish and cod liver oils, safflower, sunflower, olive and soya oils. http://www.old-fashioned-values.com/item.asp?n=SHEDSTOP&f=1
Or Dr. Maggies Supplement for skin and coat.... http://www.drmaggie.ca/products_skin.html
Here is a site with some common questions and facts about skin and coat supplements along with some products that can be used and what you should look for in a product. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?aid=1060
PS Cod liver oil is used in almost all skin supplements for dogs as it is a great source for Vitamin A & D and it is one of the best sources of Omega 3 fatty acids. It not only helps with skin and coat but it also works to ease and prevent joint inflammation and arthritis, as well as contributing greatly to heart, bone and brain health, and skin hair and nails. You GSD is a higher risk for arthritis because of the breed so it would be ideal to use cod liver oil since it helps with that as well as skin and coat... Here is some more info about Cod liver oil specifically and its health benefits... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cod_liver_oil

I have a 4 month old rotti x pup. She had a bad dandruff like problem 1 month ago. My Vet told me to give her a tin of sardines once a week then drop to once a fortnight till the problem cleared up & then ongoing as I felt necessary from there. IT WORKED !! results within first 2wks, now all gone & her coat is shiny & healthy. Cheap to buy in 'no frills' brand. Contains all the "oils" & vitamins necessary. good luck :)

I used fish oil for my German Shepard Dog and my Stafford Shire Terrier .It helped their skin a lot.I have never used cod liver oil, so I can't say it is not good for your dog. But I, myself, would go for the fish oil.

I tried fish oil on my Lab....didn't seem to do anything.
I replaced the oil with a raw egg every other night in his food for a week and he's feeling great!
Hope this helps..

I've used both on my lab...made her breath smell fishy, but it was great for her skin.
I just used my best judgement on amount gave her a drizzle on her food..
another answer-er suggested a raw egg, and I'm going to have to disagree with that.
the albumin in egg whites can cause dogs to get sick. (not always, but it can happen)
a cooked egg, or just egg yolk would be safer.
