The original recipe of absinthe is illegal everywhere. It contained methanol which is an alcohol that was famous for having sent to lunatic asylum a lot of frenchmen, artists, poor fellows and even rich alcoholics. The version that is currently sold is devoid of methanol and is harmless (well as harmless as any other liquor I mean). But the fact is that you can't find it everywhere. It's not that popular yet despite its sulfurous and thus tantalizing reputation.

No. it used to be but the ban was lifted a couple of years ago. I bought some in Tescos for new year, can't remember much though. They say Van Gough cut off his ear because of his dependency on absinthe.

not illegal at all.

I sometimes wonder if the absinthe sold nowadays is a patch on the stuff made famous by Arthur Rimbaud, Oscar Wilde etc though.

It isnt illegal anymore, but the stuff you buy in the supermarkets isnt as strong as the real stuff. It is a hallucinogenic and the real stuff is about 90% vol.
