I currently sing. I write music lyrics. I also played the calrinet from grade school until 10th grade. I recently took a beginners piano class. I would really like to perfect my musical abilities...Where do I begin?

There are many things you can do, depending on your interest. If you want to learn songwriting, there are classes for that. If you're interested in learning music theory, there are classes for that, too. Continuing with piano and/or clarinet are also paths you can take. Voice lessons can also be helpful. Just remember that even professionals continue to learn and practice, so whatever path you take, it'll be a lifelong road of learning and perfecting. Have fun.

If your in Scotland, you could apply at the RSAMD- The Royal Scottish Academy Of Music And Drama or if you're anywhere else, just check out part time courses you can attend and take as many lessons offered in school or college. If there are any musical extra curricular activities then try them out and another thing to consider is, if your school have drama productions...very often they look for people to write a song for the trailer or for during the plays, so if that crops up, try suggesting that you write a song for it... Good Luck! :)

Start with private lessons. I also sing and when I took voice lessons I improved more than I thought I could. Lessons are VERY important. Another way is to perform as much as possible. That way you get feedback and will be able to fix mistakes and enhance good qualities.

One thing that will most definitely help is to listen to music: a lot of it. Not just one style either, try listening to all sorts of music: Baraque, Rennasaince, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, but also Country, Rock, Bluegrass. Especially try listening to music that is someone foreign to your likes and tastes or what you normally hear. This Will help you develop skills in good phrasing, and will help you to develop a better 'musical pallett'.

If you're currently in high school, join a competitive marching band (if your school has) It will be the most valuable thing you'll ever do in your life. The music is simpler, but the passion is real.
