I invented something new (Not an innovation, it is an invention)

it is working fine and nice!

So what are the next right steps to take?

Depends on where you live. The first thing is to contact a GOOD friend and use them as PROOF that you have invented something, and then DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Next go to a Patent Office and get a Patent for your invention. That way anyone that uses your invention will have to pay you money to do so. An Attorney may come in handy if you think someone else might try and steal you invention, or you think you might be cheated in any way.

Another route is to give it away... using a license like GNU...

Patents (good ones, ones that don't leave loopholes open that any large company can exploit) are extremely expensive...

You can easily end up paying for a patent that is work crap...

& if you do, then you become just one of those guys who got a crap patent...

If you give the idea away, you become the guy who gave it away, making it effectively impossible for any large company to then patent a similar idea...

Now you are a 'hero' of 'open source'...

Of course, you pay a theoretic price of not making as much money (but then again, chances are, you wouldn't make that much (if anything) off it anyway)...

Yet another route is just make & sell it... forget the patenting...

If it is something that only serves a specialist want, then you'll probly get two or three years of sales... perhaps longer...

...

Patent it. Then maybe create a few to sell and see if people buy it. If people like it then start mass producing. Or maybe you can present the idea to a big company.
