How can there NOT be a God? I mean look at all the detail in the earth, and us, if the sun were a little bit to the left or right, we would fry to deth, or freeze to death...Everything is so perfectly put, for it all just to "happen" all of a sudden with no explenation, is out of the questioin...

People don't like the idea that they have to submit to a God, therefore they try to disprove it, but that is one heck of a mistake on their part, one that could mean an eternity in a not so pretty place...

Philosophers didn't always have such a problem with the existence of god(s). Up until perhaps 1600 AD, most philosophers (at least in western civ) thought that there probably was a god. They gradually became more skeptical. Voltaire and many others in the 1700s were deists - they believed in some kind of a god, but abhorred religion. Most of the US founders were deists.

By the 1800's a more confident pronounced form of agnosticism and even atheism became prominent among most philosophers, mainly as a result of Hume and others who made powerful arguments against the possibility of god(s).

In a nutshell, most philosophers today have a problem with god(s) because the proposition doesn't make logical sense. At least for now, there is no sound argument in favor of the existence of god(s). Furthermore, many philosophers realize that virtually all indications point in the opposite direction: god(s) can't possibly exist.

I hope that helps.

First, many of them are predisposed to bring a belief or disbelief to the table when they discuss the issue. That is to say, whatever their philosophical discourse, the thing discussed is already assumed, one way or the other.

Second, they often ask the wrong questions. It's easier to get sidetracked than you might think.

Third, whatever they decide is going to present an enormous influence over their life or someone else's. The temptation to come to a conclusion which is convenient or profitable but not necessarily true, is often overwhelming. The conclusion in these cases would not be based on actual logical argument or legitimate research or observed facts.

Instead, we have the perceived tenor of the times or the philosopher's own personal political theories, or peer pressure from his associates, who will reject him if he does not come to the same conclusions as they have, or even just ego - a willingness to believe any and every 'strike' against the possible existance of God because of its implications (mostly negative) in their own lives and conduct.

In other words, because philosophers are Fallen, like the rest of us.

I'm not sure what "so many" means, but God has a logical problem with infinite regression. God's existence requires an even greater metaGod to create the primary God.

They don't lots of them were very religious. In fact, the whole idea of monotheism (one god) comes from, as far as I remember, Plato who stipulated that in order for the universe to come into exsistence their had to be an intelligent agent involved to start things off, a prime mover.

a philosopher seeks answers to esoteric questions. gods are an answer, a closed query, an end product, no further inquiry need be made. "god did it" leaves no room for the philosopher.

Because if they don't do so, we would not call them philosophers.
Know that even if they discovered that there is a God, they will not admit it .
They made their own choice and we made our choices. may Allah guide them. :-)

Know that God says in the Quran, that Guidance will come to people wherever they are and who ever they are, but when they deny the truth, God will keep guiding them until they accept the truth, but If they keep in their arrogance, God make it difficult for them to understand, they will be blind, deaf and arrogant, because God will help them in their arrogance in puting satan arround them, so he can help them in their evil doings.

God is just, he created paradise for the believers and hell for the disbelievers, so he is good for the first ones and severe in punishment for the last ones.
God will not oppress nobody and har nobody, but people harm themselves in denying the sings from God.
Know that God is most merciful, even if the nonbelievers deny him, he keep sustaining them, helping them in this life, guiding them. but when they start arguing and denying simplest things they become in danger of misguidance. may God save us.

I advice everybody, whatever happen in this world, keep your heart open and try to learn, don't give an answer until you are sure, don't be arrogant, don't let satan whisper to you, don't let the wrath of God come to you. there is many people in the History that were punished by God, he destroyed the people of Noah, Lot , Pharoe and others. so never answer without knowledge. never answer without proof.
If I say now that I am muslim and I believe in our creator the only God and I worship him. many react to this and forget that I am not talking about an Idol or a person or a moon. I am talking about God the creator. so think about it then try to see if it is wrong to say so. if you have a prove bring it and keep your heart open and ask for guidance from God only. then I can tell you that you will succeed and find the truth.
If you have a question, just ask.

Because whne one thinks abstractly, he learns God could not be what he says he is.

I have no problem with more realistic Gods.
