I do not need to go to AA, but someone I know wants to learn all about it before they consider going. Can someone tell me EVERYTHING about it and all the activites that go on at a meeting?

Basically, at an AA meeting, people share their "experience, strength, and hope" in their battle with alcoholism and desire to pass that message on to others. Along with reading from the 12 Steps to Sobriety, AA members will read from books like "One Day At A Time", "As Bill Sees it", and other recovery related information designed to help AA members or those seeking additional inforamtion learn about alcoholism and addiction. It is particulary good when self identified recoverung alcoholics share their experience of alcoholism with others. This "lead" as it is called is to help allow both the recovering aslocholic and the ones seeking information, learn first hand what it was like, what had to be done, and what must be done to stay a recoverung alcoholic and to achieve sobriety. You notice I call it..Alcoholism....not Alocholwasim. Thus in AA, it is always a journey on the road to total sobriety. Hope this helps!!!

AA is a place where Alcoholics can go to hear about other peoples experiences with alcohol (in almost every case bad), it is a group setting and if a new person is feeling nervous they don't have to share the first few times they go but it does help to get things off your chest. I have attended a few meetings and they weren't so bad but I felt that it wasn't for me, they have a share time where anyone is free to speak and they a social thing after wards where you may speak to someone one on one (if the nervous thing gets to ya) and they usually have some kind of snack and coffee and just about everybody that attends smokes so be prepared for that if you or they or whoever doesn't smoke. Like I said I wasn't into AA and early last year in February I decided to quit the sauce on my own terms, of course I had family that was concerned that I couldn't do it myself and felt that I needed help to stop. I quit cold turkey for nine months and have returned to drinking but this time I have will power over myself and haven't gone on any binges like I used to. As it goes they say that only 2% can truly quit on their own which is quite the losing battle if you ask me but at least there is something out there for those that are seeking help and people need to be thankful for those that are willing to help those that can't help themselves and that is what AA is really all about.

First off, AA is a RELIGIOUS program, no matter how much it claims it's "spiritual, not religious". This matter has come before the Second and Seventh District Courts, The New York Court of Appeals, and the Tennessee Supreme Court and all have decided that AA is at least "religious in nature".

A new person in AA has a 1 in 20 chance of staying sober for one year, the same as quitting using no program. Here's a list of recovery methods, listed in order of effectiveness:

in a nutshell, this is what they do>>> talk about your problem, discussion groups, find solutions to the problem and find some contacts and sponsors.

NO, I CAN BUT WON'T THESE MEETINGS ARE NOT UP FOR DISCUSSION
IF YOUR FRIEND WANTS TO GO TO ONE, ALL SHE HAS TO DO IS SIT AND LISTEN - NO ONE WILL BOTHER HER UNLESS SHE'S INITIATES CONVERSATION...NO ONE.
