It is unhealthy to chew gum while your hungry. You're tricking your stomach into thinking that you're actually eating when you do this. Your stomach then goes into the entire process of food digestion even though there's nothing there.
I wouldn't recommend it at all.

I would think that the chewing and swallowing action would induce your stomach to produce acid for digestion. I doubt that this is really good for the stomach lining (extra acid= no food to digest).

Probably better to drink a glass of water before chewing gum if you are going to do that.
