Get a water pistol and give the cat a little squirt if he starts to claw the wall, or spray the wall with jif lemon or anything citrus.

A spay bottle with water might work, but you have to be there to catch the cat scratching to spray it.They don't like the smell of lemon so you might be able to spray the surface with lemon and water and then when the cat gets a taste of it when washing it's paws it may stop then.put the scratch post in front of where the cat likes to scratch the heaviest?

Go to your local health food shop and buy some citronella oil mix it with water in a spray bottle and spray that anywhere you don't want your cat to go ( this also works with dogs) Cats do not like the smell of it and stay away from the area you have sprayed it.

No. As stupid as it sounds, I've heard that showing the cat how to use the post works. Get on your knees, get their attention, and scratch the post with a nail or something. Careful with that nail!

I've heard that higher posts also help (since wild cats scratch trees). Also, put something she likes on the top, which will make her want to touch it.

Show the cat that those posts are nice and scratchy!

We tried the following with our persian: we got a small water pistol and every time he went to scratch the sofa or wallpaper we gave him a small squirt. as he didnt associate the squirt with us- he didnt know where it was coming from- he just associated it with the behaviour of scratching and stopped within about a week. It was only a little bit of water so please don't think that we hurt him doing this!

Every time you see the cat scratching up the wall, spry it with water...Most cats don't like being wet, so when you spray them with the water there not going to like it. They will eventually learn that every time they do it....there going to get sprayed.

Also if that doesn't work.....get them declawed.

my cat likes to stratch the sofa, but we got her one of those carboard stratcher things and it comes with catnip, spinkle a little catnip in the board and maybe place your cat on the board, or maybe try just buyin catnip and put it on the post,

[you can get the board thing at Wal-Mart for about 3 dollars ]

hope this helped :)
