It depends on your budget, mostly. You have to factor in cost of your license to carry concealed, plus ammo, cleaning kit, hearing proctection, etc. Figure that if you have a $1,000 budget, you can probably get your a decent gun like the Kimber Pro Carry in .45 ACP, which is what I usually carry.

If your budget is more like $500, then consider the Taurus Millenium pistols or possibly a Ruger SP101. On the other hand, if you want to go the bare-bones route, you can skip the cleaning kit and hearing protection and extra ammo and just buy a Russian Makarov. They go for around $200 and they are 100% reliable.

It would be nice to get a Kimber Aegis, or a Springfield TRP, but let's be realistic, you can only buy what you can afford. Now, on the Glocks that everybody seems to be recommending, they're decent guns. I have a Glock 26 that I carry on occasion. But, they're not the best guns for concealed carry because they are a little thicker than many handguns and can be uncomfortable to wear on your hip for a couple hours straight.

The best way to know what gun is best for you is hit the local gun shop and start fingerprinting them. Pick a good caliber and a gun that fits your budget, then start checking them out.

I have a Glock Model 23.It is a compact .40 S&W,which is plenty for self-defense.It is small, flat and easily concealed. The Glock pistols are very reliable and have accuracy for self-defense situations.Mine has night sights on it for low light situations.I also have a .357 Sig barrel for it,the magazines are interchangeable since the .357 is a .40 necked down to 9 mm.
Having said all that, any compact, flat pistol with a large enough caliber(above 9mm,I feel) that you can comfortably handle and shoot(and you should practice frequently) will serve you well as a concealed weapon.

I prefer the Sig P245.

It's light, small enough to comfortably carry just about anywhere (except in an ankle holster), and it packs .45 cal. stopping power.

Additionally, there's no need for the "******/locked" of the single action pistols, and ,ergonomically speaking, I really don't experience the kick I usually get from my smaller 1911 clone Firestar M45 (which I ALSO love all to heck, a VERY sweet weapon!).

IMHO, a good concealment gun would be either compact or subcompact. If you have smallish hands, subcompacys are perfect.
I have large hands, so I would want compact.

subcompacts: Walther PPK/SigP232/mimi-Glocks/micro-1911s/J-frame revolvers

compacts: Glock 19/23, Colt Officer's model and clones/SigSauer P225,239/SW Sigma VE

The above are just a few examples

I carry a Springfield Armory 1911A-1. I like the idea if I run out of ammo I can beat the bad guy with it. You can't do that with combat tupperware.

I prefer the .45 ACP for the knock down power. I won't carry anything under 9MM.

A 1911 sub-compact is a popular choice, however when I turn 21 I will likely carry a PPK.

Single-stack autoloaders will carry best. You'll have to judge for yourself how much bulk/weight is enough and how much is too much. You'll also have to decide on how safe you feel with a single-action carried "****** and locked" or a Glock with the safety all but non-existent.
