Nah, you don't have to be a bit nuts and a testosterone maniac to join the Marines, that will come naturally. I had a blast when I was in, I consider that one of the high lights of my life. All armed services will turn you a bit nuts though. Remember, the job of the military is to go out and kill America's enemies and part of the job description is you might get killed yourself, man its an adrenaline rush let me tell you.
I really don't think the military changes, it just enhances what is already there. If it is not in you to do what the military requires then you won't make it past the initial training phase. There is nothing wrong with the Marines.

Basic Training ( Boot Camp) is a period of re molding a person, into the Corps' ideals. Boot Camp is not for the squeamish. Yes it is very like Jarhead (Current) or Full Metal Jacket( 1960s)
Once you are out of Boot camp and complete your MOS Training, the Marine Corps is much like a normal job.
It doesn't hurt to be a little Gung-Ho, crazy and a little maniacal as you need a very strong positive upbeat personna, to survive.
Remember, the Marine Corps is training you to become a Warrior and all the training revolves around you being able to survive in life & death situations, and to help your fellow Marines to survive also.
The Marine Corps experience will change anyone ....and will last you a lifetime. Remember this..." Once a Marine, Always a Marine" Semper Fi ( Always Faithful) These are Marine Mottos and last a lifetime. 36 years later., I am still a Proud Marine.

No that movie just showed boot camp and the war. There is a fun life being a Marine has to offer. There are nearly as many women Marines as male Marines. You don't have to be crazy to be a Marine but you do have to know how to warp from "Charlie Spencer the guy next door" to "Devil Dog Sgt. Spencer" in the eye of the enemy. Marines really only act like testosterone driven maniacs to pump themselves up for a battle. Being a Marine is a lifelong change, full of long time memories, and a lifetime achievement.

In the Marines you are torn down and rebuilt as a new person. The idea is a manufactured soldier. Yes. It will change you. Probably for the better. Jarhead is designed to show a glimpse of soldier life with a lot of human desires and expectations being explored.

Dont take too much to heart by watching "Jarhead"
While "Jarhead" is supposedly a 'true story' written by the real Swofford (played by Jake Gyllenhal) you have to keep in mind that the real Swofford was a 'failed marine'. one who couldnt cut it and was not a good Marine. His story is a reflection of that and he dwells on the negative aspects. It is basically a spin doctored story of life in the Marines written by an anti-military activist.

1. The word "Marine" when referring to members of the Corps, is always capitalized. Always.
2. Don't believe everything you see in the movies.
