if you are running on an old dirt or cinder track like we had at my school you might find that spikes give you a little more traction in the turns. if you are running on a wood or synthetic surface definitely flats - they won't let you take spikes on a wood floor anyway.

If you have a pair of flats broken in wear them, but if you are one to be more comfortable in spikes where them..just make sure you have 8ths in because there is no need for a long spike.

get xc spikes with soft rubber soles. Keep the spikes handy- but keep in mind that lots of venues don't allow spikes OR hard-plastic bottomed spikes (like conventional outdoor track spikes) Talk to your coach about what places you're racing at and what they allow.

a lot of indoor tracks don't let you use spikes. I would usually use my spike shoes, but with no spikes in them.
