I enjoy fishing but lack success. However, I noticed that others, only a few feet away, often have a large catch. Additionally, if i place the barrel of a weapon in the water and fire, what would happen, to both me and the fish? Is there any way to scare the fish by shooting in close proximity, without actually injuring them?

first of all, bullets do not penetrate that much in water maybe like a foot or two at max, you would get splashed with water and probably a fine or two, an awesome idea but not effiecient, i use grenades. "Pinapple" grenades work the best but keep small children and pets out of the water. My cousin found out the hard way when we took him to the E.R. with shrapnel in his legs. the doctors were confused about it, cause we said he fell off his bike....probably not the best excuse.

That depends...

The 30.06 rifle bullet only travels about three feet underwater.

If you shoot into the water at almost any angle, the bullets will literally ricochet off of the water and travel many hundreds of feet.
(I know this by way of a police report on a complaint against one of my firm's clients...).

Grenades and other things which produce sudden, loud noises will stun fish, but most of these things are illegal to own in this country without a federal govt. permit.

Additionally, you should have received some info. about what's allowed/not allowed when you got your fishing license ("License?
We don't need no stinking license!").

The most prudent thing to do is to go to a real hunting'fishing website (Bass Outdoors, Cabelas, etc.) or go to whereever you get your fishing rig and ask the people there about how to get more fish..

What the heck, it'll keep you out of jail ...

Myth busters did a show on firing guns underwater. The one that was most sucessful, surpringly was a .22 Long rifle I think. shooting without completely submerging the gun can be VERY DANGEROUS! Doing it completely submerged would just be....silly.

In every state, in every law book there is a section clearly devoted to the prohibition of explosives for fishing.
That means guns, grenade blanks, fireworks, dynomite etc..
To toss a 1/2 stick in the water to kill 10 fish *might* be fun for you personally, until your license gets revoked permanently, and you can get fines for something like $1,000 per fish (depending on state and species).
