it won't cost you that much and the rewards of having sole custody will far out weigh the cost. plus, they will go after her for child support which will help you raise this child.

Well, it's called a separation agreement, so even if you divorce, it won't be down to the judge who your child stay with.
It's better that way.
The person who is responsible for the children should get an allowance, which is determined by their salary and the number of time they have contact with their child(ren).
In the separation agreement, you basically come to an agreement regarding everything attached to your marriage, children, property, goods, everything.
The flexibility is that you can discuss with your partner and change a few things when it suits you if you both agree.
The price of a solicitors work will depend on how much you earn.
When you don't have a job,or don't earn a lot, it's free as you'll be entitled to legal aid.
But obviously, the best start for both of you, is to maintain communication and part on as amicable terms as possible.

Go for it. If worried about the cost go to citizens advice and ask for legal help they may be able to provide solicitor for cheap or even free depending on your circumstances. if not they will guide you in the right direction

responsible for 1/2 of the expenses. so start by taking your
son to a child psychologist....
