You pull it off as close to the skin as you can with tweezers. Then put the dog on fleas and tick treatment like Frontline or Revolution.

The first time my dog had a tick I thought the bump was a blood blister but when I looked really closely I could see the feelers move near the dog's skin where the tick's head was buried. I was totally grossed out and took him immediately to the emergency vet clinic. I watched what they did and the second time my dog got a tick I removed it myself.

First spray the tick with a flea and tick spray and wait about 15 to 30 minutes for the tick to die and then remove it with tweezers. I got the wide kind of tweezers from a pet store which work better than the small ones for eyebrows. Be sure, as others have said, that you remove the tick as close to the skin as you can to make sure you get it all.

There are many varieties of ticks, but the kind we have in California are about 1/4 inch long (before they are engorged with blood). They almost look like a watermelon seed. I do my best to prevent them, but if one appears, I put my thumb nail under the body of the tick and my middle finger close to the dog's skin on top and pull. Do it quickly so the dog doesn't get upset - it can hurt a little. This is something you can do yourself. You don't have to go to the vet unless the dog is invested. You can buy flea and tick stuff if ticks are endemic in your area.

taking it to the vet is your best bet. A tick is small and brownish.

looks like a beatle digging under the skin. once inside it will start sucking blood making it's back end expand. this is a sack full of dark coloured blood. best way to get rid of them is to pull it out with tweezers. make sure you get it all they are tough sob's. flush the body or burn it with a lighter.
