I would just tell them that you are looking at this time and you will let them know when you need help.

Tell them that you are not interested in buying but memorizing the names of the different brands for a project. I am sure the sales clerk will share the information with other sales clerks before you know it.

I have befriended sales clerks at different department stores. They come up to me and say hello, they can be very helpful if you let them. There's one who is always giving me discount coupons.Say you receive a 15.00 off a purchase coupon in the mail, she'll give me a 25.00 off coupon.Their managers are constantly watching them making sure that they are doing their job well. Some sales clerks even let me know if there's a sale coming up.If you have trouble finding your size they will call another location and ask them to hold it.Don't let them annoy you,use it to your advantage. You're really helping them out too.

Yes, politely telling them you'll find them if you need help works up to a point.

But often they will still at least shadow you. Besides being nearby in case you decide you want them (and the manager seeing them nearby), they are watching to make sure you aren't stealing anything.

As long as they stop talking to me, that's usually good enough for me.

Just do what I do at new car dealerships when a clerk comes around me, just tell him "I just looking around". They normally go away.

Take advantage of their help! When you are in the fitting room, you can ask them to go fetch a different size. You can ask them for their advice when you try something on. If they are really on your nerves, then work them to death and they will avoid you.

Annoying or not, they are just doing their job.

You could simply say with a smile, "I'm just having a look now thank you, but I will be sure to call on you if I need assistance."

They are just doing their job. The first time they approach you politely state, "Thank you. I'm just looking though. I'll let you know if I need anything."

Tell her you are just browsing in a way that you imply that you don't intend to spend money.

Dont smile or make eye contact with them, and when they ask you "you need any help!"--say, "No, I'm just looking" and trun away--that usually does it for me.
