Make sure you download and install Windows Movie Maker 2.1.
Microsoft have released quite a few updates since its release....

Do you have sufficient ram and free hard drive space. Alot of times people have too much stuff on their hard drive such as digital pics, music etc.... and it bogs down your hard drive. I have had this issue when editing music, and once I cleared everything else out it seemed to stop the freezing up. good luck
