Just like Christianity and Judaism (and recently even Buddhism), there are a few sectarian fundamentalists among every crowd who, frustrated that God doesn't come down here and show everyone that they are right and everyone else is wrong, decide to take "Gods will" into their own hands.

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.
And hold fast, all together, to the rope of Allah and be not divided; and remember the favour of Allah which He bestowed upon you when you were enemies and He united your hearts in love, so that by His grace you became as brothers; and you were on the brink of a pit of fire and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah explain to you His commandments that you may be guided.
Surely, all believers are brothers. So make peace between your brothers, and fear Allah that mercy may be shown to you.
And strive in the cause of Allah as it behoves you to strive for it. He has chosen you and has laid no hardship upon you in the matter of religion; so follow the faith of your father Abraham; He has named you Muslims both before and in this Book, so that the Messenger may be a witness over you, and you may be witnesses over mankind. Therefore observe Prayer and pay the Zakaat, and hold fast to Allah. He is your Protector and an Excellent Protector and an Excellent Helper!

Not all shia and Sunnis fight each others, there are only few percent of such peoples in each group, i would call it their ignorance and basically there is some hidden hand behind all these fights which is interetsted to get political advantage from such disturbance.and thats why such evil force make them come agaisnt each other...but the ones who play as puppets for such evil forces are even more ignorant that they even forget that they follow the same God...peoples have damaged islam by making such groups in it. this grouping is damaging the good picture of islam.

Sadly other than for policial reasons, they probably don't even know why they're fighting.
