For temporary relief, take over the counter meds. Eat nutritional meals, drink PLENTY of water and rest. Your body will take the course required to fight the illness. That's what a fever does but with the above advice, you can help it along a bit faster. Therefore, let it take it;s toll.

Solution that's older than the hills:

Some may say not to do this, I'm not sure what is the "up to date" way to lower a fever, but my mother has done this to me my ENTIRE life. Her parents did it to her, and so on.

Take a dose of Advil or Tylenol that says "reduces fever" on the label.
Drink plenty of fluids.
and (here is the older than the hills part) Sweat.

Lay down, and cover up with blankets. Try to go to sleep. You will sweat. Don't kick off the blankets. Maybe have someone close by to make sure you don't kick off the blankets, but I noticed that I sweat better when I sleep with a fever. You just want to sweat some. Don't make yourself hot, just hot enough to sweat a little.
My mom says that you are basically sweating off the fever. It is your body's way of lowering the heat.

If your fever goes up too high (once I had a fever of 105.2), go to the doctor.
My mom put me down into a tub of cool water and slowly added ice when I had that high fever. It was in the middle of the night and we live pretty far from a hospital. She had the phone with her the whole time in case the fever went up anymore. It worked on me, and my fever went down. If you do this, remember to SLOWLY add ice because you don't want to get hypothermia.

These two remedies have worked for me many times. Some may say they should not be done or that they don't work, but I am living proof that they work.
