In many communities there is a local volunteer center that has the resources to connect you with hundreds of different non-profit agencies that can benefit from your skills and talents, and meet real community needs.

Volunteer centers provide one-time, short-term, and long-term volunteer opportunities that best match your interests. Not sure where you are located, but use these links to find your local volunteer center:

The Points of Light Foundation also offers a wealth of material for volunteers and agencies:

In some cases, when no volunteer center is present, your local chapter of the United Way also handles the volunteer matching and placement services.

Good luck!

Depending on your age there are a number of ways you can be a volunteer in your local community. Starting with at school, if you are a good student, you could tutor others. Or at a local nursing home for the elderly...they ALWAYS need help in the activity department and most often are glad to let volunteers come in. You could strike out on your own and try to clean up the side of the highway where people throw trash....volunteering doesnt have to be something you need resources for....but you could also try asking at the chamber of commerce in your city....

It depends on the type of work you want to do. Usually, the newspaper has a "volunteers needed" section, where organizations place ads for people needed to do everything from answer phones for domestic violence hotlines to working with seniors. Look in the Sunday paper. Its not in the help wanted section, but in a different section called "local events" or something like that.

Look around you. Are there any service clubs in you're area? If there is a Lions Club, check them out. Local churches usually have ways to get involve with such things as Pads, Meals On Wheels, Etc.
