Food and vegetables are covered in a food grade waxy to help preserve Them some.
Of course it's safe to eat. I try to wash my apples in warm water though.. I'm not too fond of the wax.
You can buy fruit and vegetable wash this might help remove it.

Yup, they actually put wax on a lot of produce. People are so concerned with how things look that they don't care about what they are eating as long as it looks good. These days produce looks better and better all the time while the taste is dissapearing and I can't help but suspect that this preoccupation with the image of our food has health consequences.

You dont need to peel the skinbut that kind tastes much better if you do because the skin is tough.. Have you ever tried an english cucumber? The skin is thin, you aren't supposed to peel them and they are just as refreshing!
