Poker Stars is one of the more popular and advertised sites. There are many others. You can practice on most sites with play money. Until you are absolutely unbeatable with play money , I would suggest you stay away from playing with real money. The sites always take a small percentage for the house but remember your real money is dependent on a computer program to deal the cards and flops. If you want to really want get practice with real money, set up a small real money game with friends. This way someone you know and possibly like gets your money if you lose. Keep the games small $$$ and if you are not successful at this after a while DO NOT think you can do it on-line.

I think you should start with the basics. It's like building a house. You don't start with the roof, add a few windows and hope for the best.

Yes pokerstars is one of the best, you can play with no risk at : FULL TILT, DOYLES ROOM, ABSOLUTE POKER, ULTIMATE BET.
And yes you can win a lot and you can loose a lot....depending on your poker skill......
I play poker for a living and of course I play online a lot on several site. Their is no risk from online poker, especially if you decide to play on one of those site. The only risk is you with your decisions at the table.
