My daughter and her father love to go to the shooting range. I myself have nothing against guns. I am just skittish around them. They have asked me to join them this weekend. But Im scared! Is shooting a gun really scary or is it all in my head?

Yay! I did it! Im soooo glad I went. I really did have a lot of misconceptions. It was not that hard to do, and I discovered with the ear plugs the noise was bearable. It was a really fun thing to do as a family. And, now I want to take a class on safety. I have let fear hold me back soo many times. I am glad I was able to let go and learn something new even though it frightened me. I cant wait to go again.

What you are experiencing is normal. It's good to learn how to shoot and handle a gun safely. (Knowledge is always good.) Start with the lowly 22 rimfire which does not "kick" at all. It's only one step up from a pellet gun.
Though I've been shooting for years, my fondest memories are the times in the fields with friends and family. Just plinking brightly colored clay pigeons placed on the ground at varying distances is a lot of fun.
They should offer you both hearing and eye protection, too.

My daughter was 9 years old when hurricane Katrina hit. In her class at school each student picks a newspaper article every firday and they read it and discuss it with the class.
She found an article on a gang rape in New Orleans during Katrina. Although the teacher quickly stopped her from discussing it in class, it didn't stop my 9 year old from wanting to know what it was.
It was an out of left field kinda thing. But she is intelligent and I was as honest as possble.
That weekend I began teaching her about the family firearms. She understands that there are bad people in the world and the proper use of a firearm as a self defense tool can possibly be a life saver or personal dignity protector.
Yes, you should learn the proper and safe use of a firearm.

It's all in your head. You need to be absolutely certain of the rules of safety, and learn some basics about the proper way to hold and handle your firearm, but the things are incredibly safe and reliable when used properly, and tons of fun.
Note: if you flinch or otherwise let your fear interfere with proper use, it's better to quit early and try again later than to let it turn into a phobia.

I've known many women who shoot guns and love doing so.
Rolling tin cans across the ground while making lots of noise is better than professional therapy as far as making your troubles melt away.
Besides, in an unforseen situation it could be a skill that saves your life or the life of a loved one.
Just like learning CPR!

it all in your head. But even if you do not like shooting since the guns are in your house you should have some knowledge of them if just for safety sakes Yes go to the range and at least get some safety lessons with them.

Guns are not at all as portrayed on television. Gunfights in the Old West were not fair - victory belonged to the stone-cold hearted as portrayed in "Unforgiven". Thank you for your skittishness - it is simply wrong to romanticize guns. They were originally invented to gain an advantage in battle, and ended up being used in hunting later. It is right to enjoy target shooting, but never forgot that some kid might actually take one to school - and most gangsters have many. I am a shooter and will never turn to a gun for self defense. Annie Oakley is a good role model. She did not use her talent to try to make the buffalo extinct. War is a terrible thing.

Good for you. Shooting can be a very fun and safe activity when handled in the correct manner. Kind of like driving a car: if you follow the rules and seek proper training, you'll be okay.

OK why not? guns are your friend. they are there to help you protect yourself and feed you if need be. every female i have ever taught to shoot seem to be a natural, i think it has something to do with pointing. they (females) are just good at it. enjoy the noise, have fun feeling the power of a firearm go off in your hand and try to hit something. make it a skill challenge for you and your daughter and don't get mad when she whips your butt, just have fun......

You can start with a .22. Fun to shoot, not very loud, and zero kick. A ten year old could shoot one. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

YES!
it'll remove a lot of the fears and misconceptions you have about firearms, and perhaps it will become something that your whole family could do together and spend quality time, with earplugs.
